The first time I thought about wanting to make soap was when I was in the shower. I happened to be reading the ingredients in my body wash to see what it contained. I had a slight understanding of how real soap was made, but never thought about how the bright colored and ultra-strong smelling bottled body wash came to be. The label looked like it was written in an alien language. I realized I didn’t want to have all of these preservatives and chemicals on my skin anymore. People had been making soap for thousands of years without these ingredients, Ancient Egyptians made soap just fine without things like cocamidopropyl betaine and methylchloroisothiazolinone, so why couldn’t I?
I started my research and ordered my supplies, I was ready to make my first batch of soap. I used the hot- process style, which is the old way of making soap, cooking it to fully “activate” the lye. The whole process was going great, it was scented, colored, even had dried flowers in it to jazz it up. Too easy! Got it in the mold and was impatiently waiting to get it back out again. I was excited! The next day I unmolded and cut my creation, eager to take a shower and finally try my own soap. I hoped in the shower to try it out, and it was horrible! I thought, if anything, the flowers would gently exfoliate when they become exposed, turns out they scratch the hell out of you! Yet, I was determined to keep trying and learn to make it better, I wanted to get away from the artificial detergents I had been using. I kept practicing and learning, determined to make soap that I was happy with, and more importantly, my skin was really happy with.
When I ordered my supplies for the first time I thought that was just going to be a quarantine project to keep me busy, but after my first batch I realized that it was something I truly loved doing. From there starting SW Soaps was inevitable, I knew it was something that I wanted to keep doing. I also knew I wasn’t the only one who wanted to get away from synthetic detergents and go back to using natural ingredients for healthier skin. SW Soaps was made so I could provide everyone with a product that actually is what it says on the label: SOAP!
